A Day in the Studio - Part 1

It's been just over a year since we released our CD "Sex & Coffee," and while we're still introducing new fans to those songs, our loyal fans at our live shows have been hearing some of our new material and asking when the new stuff will be available.

"Well," we said to ourselves, "if folks are gonna ask for the new music, maybe we should start recording it!" So, this past weekend, that's what we did.

Now, in the interest of managing expectations, it takes a while to put together a full-length CD. So we probably won't start recording the full LP until January, but we do have a single that we're going to release this fall - "Ride a Rocket." That's what we're working on now. The song will be on the full release next year, but it will be available as a single in a couple of months.

We're super excited to be working on the track with our friend Rob Seidenberg. Rob is a producer, a musician, the owner of Fiesta Red Records, and, if none of that music stuff impresses you, an avid ultimate frisbee player. We do not play ultimate frisbee, so we're psyched about the music stuff. He's also just a really cool guy.

Rob is producing "Ride a Rocket" for us in his Waller Sound studio. Since it will be a while before we have the actual song to share with you, we thought we'd share some photos of the process. So, here for your enjoyment is "A Day in the Studio with The Staylyns - Part 1":

Johnny - always doin' bidness.

"You want a mini trumpet on this track? Cuz I got one."

Rob showing off his mad kazoo trumpet skillz.

Pick a guitar - any guitar!

The vintage Hofner? Why, yes, that will do nicely.

Elvis thinks we need to get to work.
First up is drums. Joe tests out the drum room - ready to lay down the foundation.
Second was the bass tracks. Since there are no photos of me doing that, here is a picture of the Beatles (signed by their original drummer Pete Best - that just made it more interesting, didn't it?).

Next, Johnny recorded the rhythm guitar tracks.

Enough music - it's SNACK TIME! What is that, Johnny? It looks like some kind of power bar. What's it made from? "Chocolate and crickets." I'm sorry, chocolate and what?
"Crickets. It's...good. Right Joe?"

Sure, Johnny! Whatever you say!
(The real look on Joe's face when he tasted it.)
You know what? I think I'll stop there with our first installment. I'll let you chew on that, as it were.

Coming soon: "A Day in the Studio with The Staylyns - Part 2" - or as Paul Harvey would say, the REST of the story!

    1. Part 2 has a few more Suzy pics, Laurie! I tend to spend more time behind the camera than in front of it. :)
